The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks remain one of the most tragic and defining moments in modern American history. On that morning, hijacked commercial airplanes were deliberately flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, causing catastrophic destruction, thousands of deaths, and lasting global impact.
At 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Just 17 minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower in front of live television audiences around the world. As fires burned through both skyscrapers, thousands of civilians, office workers, police officers, and firefighters fought desperately to evacuate and rescue those trapped inside. At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed, followed by the North Tower at 10:28 a.m., sending massive clouds of smoke and debris across Lower Manhattan.
In total, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, including victims from more than 90 countries. Hundreds of firefighters, police officers, emergency medical workers, and first responders lost their lives while attempting rescue operations inside the towers.
The attacks also included the crash of American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to stop the hijackers.
The events of September 11 profoundly changed the United States and the world, leading to major shifts in national security, global politics, aviation safety, and military operations. Annual memorial ceremonies continue honoring the victims, survivors, and first responders connected to the tragedy.
Today, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum stands at the former World Trade Center site, serving as a place of remembrance for the lives lost and the resilience shown in the aftermath of one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in history.
